According to Mark Knopfler who is the lead singer of the band Dire Straits and the writer of "Money for Nothing", he wrote the song in 1984 when he visited an appliance store in New York, and in the store, an employee was watching MTV. The employee apparently disgusted by what he was watching made a remark that Mark Knopfler said made him instantly get a pen and begin to write the song.

According to Knopfler while watching the music video on MTV, the worker said so many things that got stuck in his head, one of which was the legendary line, "What are those, Hawaiian noises? That ain't working…" In the interview, Mark Knopfler said that the song was written from the perspective of a working-class man watching flamboyant music videos and making remarks based on the things that unfold in the music videos.
